A new painting of St. Michael's Church by Charleston Artist Katherine Schneider

I enjoyed painting historic St. Michael's Church in the early morning sun as the bells from the steeple chimed the time as they have for centuries.

St. Michaels's Church, situated at the "Four Corners of Law" in Charleston, is the oldest church building in the city. Both President George Washington in 1791 and General Robert E. Lee in 1861 attended worship sevices at St. Michael's during visits to the city. Although the entire steeple sank 8" as a result of the earthquake 1886, the steeple clock remaines the oldest functioning colonial tower clock in the country.

When the painting was on view at a recent exhibit, a comment was made that "angels" could be seen in the brushwork of sky above the church. The artists chose to paint at a wide variety of locations in downtown Charleston ranging from historic churches such as St Michaels Church painted by OPA member Katherine Schneider to harbor vistas, historic homes and waterfront parks.

OPA member John Hulsey and his wife Ann traveled from Kansas to participate in the Charleston paint out.

As the artists completed their plein air works, the paintings were delivered to Lambert Gray Gallery where they were hung for an evening exhibition and reception.

Oil Painters of America (OPA) artist members and guests will be painting "en plein air" (on location) in historic downtown Charleston from 10:00 - 4:00 Saturday November 12, as part of the 2011 Oil Painters of America "Great American Paint Out".

This year's event in Charleston is being organized by OPA members Sally Reynolds and Hilarie Lambert and is hosted by Lambert Gray Gallery and Studios 54 Broad St. Charleston SC. A reception will follow at the gallery 5:30 - 7:00 pm.

Several artists including Katherine Schneider will be painting along historic Broad Street during the morning and afternoon and welcome visitors to stop by and see what's on their easels.

A bright red Japanese maple and intertwining vines of pink roses and confederate jasmine blooming on the garden gate of the Joseph Verre House were the inspiration for this plein air (on location) painting .

Charleston's historic colonial homes are graced with some of the loveliest, intimate garden spaces in the country. While they are often planted to be enjoyed all year long, it is in the spring that they outdo themselves with colorful blooms.

Winter blooming Camellia japonica
After an unusually long cold spell this winter, warm sunny days have finally retured to the Lowcountry. The Gardens at Magnolia Plantation are full of winter beauty, with of hundreds of camellias, Japanese cherry trees, plants and bulbs filling the grounds with colorful blooms. As I painted under the moss draped live oaks, I was impressed by the timeless beauty of the historic Magnolia Plantation House in the garden.

I also enjoyed the challenge of painting on a larger plein air easel similar to those used by the 19th century Cape Cod outdoor painters. Their easels were designed with a wide leg base to withstand high winds and harsh winter weather conditions.

This style of easel also accommodates a larger paint box allowing more space for paint and supplies. It was interesting to paint with the different gear... both the pochade paintbox with tripod and Beauport style easel are useful and have unique qualities for painting on location.

This month the moon has been rising early in the eastern sky. It's already ascended high above the horizon by twilight-the time between sundown and full darkness in the evening.

My painting "Twilight Moon Rising" catches the brief time when the moon shines softly as it rises through the fading light over the marsh.

Christmas Pomanders - Fragrant and Festive Symbols of Prosperity and Good Luck

Have you ever smelled the spicy fragrance of clove studded oranges? The wonderful fragrance of citrus and cloves filled the air as I worked on this painting of "Spicy Christmas Treats".

For my painting, I made orange pomanders by piercing fresh oranges with whole cloves. Click here for more about making pomanders.

Next, I positioned the orange pomanders on a plate so that the pattern of cloves made an intersecting line with a red bow and candy cane. This strengthened the painting's composition by using both line direction and color contrast in the center of interest also called the "focal point".
I used a cool greenish gray background to contrast with the warm red and orange colors of the fruit and candy. In art as in life, contrasting elements add impact and interest. The important thing is to keep it all in balance.

Clove studded fruit has been a favorite holiday tradition since the 15th century. England's Queen Elizabeth I was reported to have always worn a pomander. Read more about the history of pomanders at this link.

In the ancient customs of Europe and China, oranges have been given as New Years gifts to symbolize a wish for prosperity and good fortune.
With this painting of orange pomanders, I too wish you peace, prosperity and good fortune in the New Year.

"Evening Light on Hampton Plantation" an original oil painting done on location at Rutledge's ancestral home was selected by the publisher for the cover. (click here for more information about the painting).

The book features a collection of holiday stories by Archibald Rutledge (1883 -1973) one of the most prolific outdoor and nature writers of the 20th century and the first Poet Laureate of South Carolina.

Painting outside en plein air is always a challenge. Shifting weather conditions and rapidly changing light are only a few of the problems to be considered when painting on location. Recently I decided to take on an even more challenging task - Painting outside in the dark to study the subtle effects of moonlight on the landscape.

I had a great evening painting in the moonlight even though I wasn't sure of what the paintings looked like til I got back to the studio.

I decided to work on a larger than usual (16 x20") canvas. It felt good to paint in a larger plein air format but I had to mix and paint faster to get the job done before the light changed.

I also finished a second smaller painting of the full moon seen through swaying fronds of SC's state tree - the palmetto.

I look forward to more painting in the moonlight - It's an exciting challenge to try capture in paint the subtle beauty of the moon!

"Springtime in July" could have been the weather forecast today. The unseasonably cool and dry air here in Charleston made painting out by the creek a relaxing event - unusual in this subtropical climate in the summer.

The late afternoon sun casting interesting lights on an old boardwalk out to a fishing hummock on a tidal creek is the subject of my plein air painting. Over the years, I've watched this bluff on the creek grow smaller and smaller as it is being eroded by swift tidal currents. Today I decided it was time to make a painting of it before nature has it's way and the creek reclaims the old boardwalk and the little hummock.

Making Canvas Panels for Painting

Many materials may be used for making painting panels. In this post I'm using birch plywood and fiber board as supports for canvas panels. I prefer 1/4 " or 1/2" birch plywood to fiber board (or white board) because of it's strength and resistance to warping in sizes up to 11" x 14".

First I cut the board to size and sand it with a medium grit paper or pad.

Glue is applied to the panel with a trowel. The canvas is cut to sizes 1/4" larger on each side to allow for shrinkage.

Glue is also applied to the back of the canvas with a trowel. Several different glues can be used on the panels. It's important that the adhesive used is acid free, archival (ph neutral), and water soluble. I'm using "YES!" brand paste to glue the canvas to these panels.

When the glue has been spread evenly on both the panel and the back of the cut canvas, a brayer (roller) is used to smooth out the glue and air pockets. Start in the middle of the panel and roll out to the edges.

A cover sheet of newspaper can be used when rolling the surface to catch excess glue that comes out at the edges of the canvas.

The panels can either be stacked between paper and dried under weights like books or air dried on a flat surface.

After the glue has dried, excess canvas is trimmed from the edges of the panels. The dried and trimmed canvas panels get another coat of gesso.

When the gesso has dried, the canvas panels are ready for use.

The summer weather patterns are creating beautiful skies here in the Lowcountry - towering thunderheads, cumulonimbus clouds, silvery patches of summer showers and rainbows! I've been out studying the rapidly changing effects in the summer skies recently.

"After the Storm" is a study of the atmospheric effects of passing rain clouds and an ephemeral double rainbow over a pine island in the marsh.

White Point Gardens was a great place to paint today. The park was full of activity as children hunted for Easter eggs, blankets were spread for picnics, and everyone enjoyed the sunshine by the harbor.

"Marsh Creek Reflections" Plein Air Painting by a Lowcountry Creek

A bright blue sky with cumulus clouds reflecting in a tidal marsh creek was the subject of today's plein air painting.

Lots of sunshine and temperatures in the 70's made it a great day for painting on location near Edisto Island, SC.

As I painted, I noticed that young green grass has started to push up through the brown reeds of winter.

Soon the marsh will change from the winter brown into the fresh green of new growth for Spring.

Spring Fever Replaces Frost Bite for Plein Air Painting in Charleston March 2010

What a difference a couple of weeks makes. Just a short while ago, I was painting in the snow from the same spot that this afternoon brought out shorts and a case of spring fever.

Temperatures reached the 60's with warm and sunny skies and a light breeze off the lake. Perfect weather for plein air painting or ..... not.

Even a serious outdoor painter is susceptible to being seduced by Nature on a winter afternoon like this. So I gave it my best shot until a mockingbird started singing right above me adding more enticement to "do research for my art" by relaxing and absorbing all the sights and sounds of this unseasonable warm afternoon.

In the famous words of Scarlet O'Hara "...after all, tomorrow is another day...".

Wild Brown Pelican Encounter During Painting trip

This young brown pelican showed up at a local supplies store this morning while our plein air group was preparing for a day painting in a near by fishing village.To the amazement of all, the pelican walked up the path among cars and people to the front doors of the store.

As I walked to my car, the bird followed reaching his long beak up toward the food in my hand. When I held out a piece of shrimp, the bird opened his formidably large bill and took the shrimp from my hand.

Not liking the cooked shrimp, the pelican flew to the hood of my car and tried to drink out of a bottle that had been place there. (I was too shocked to run get my camera to capture that sight!) The young bird, which had been banded, may have been bottle fed and mistook the shape of the Arizona tea bottle for a bottle feeding.
When I got into the drivers seat, the pelican walked up to the windshield and looked in to see what I was doing... which was getting my camera to capture this amazing encounter with a beautiful wild brown pelican who was very friendly.

The pelican seemed to enjoy sitting on the car and was in no hurry to leave. He let me lift him lightly from the car hood and carry him to a safer spot.
Once the pelican was safety off the car, we continued on our way to paint by the creek with the knowledge that naturalists from the Cape Romain Wildlife Center had been called to assist this cold and hungry young brown pelican.

Plein Air Painting in the Southern Snowstorm of 2010

Three inches of snow fell tonight here in Mt. Pleasant on the coast of SC.

The sight of the falling snow inspired me to get out my easel to paint the beauty of this rare moment.

It's an understatement to say that painting in the snow tonight was a "learning experience".

First lesson.. Don't try to paint without cover while the snow is still falling. It seemed so dry at first....

Second lesson: Anchor the easel well into the ground. I usually do but in the excitement of the snowstorm (and the wind had been calmer) I forgot. You can see the predictable result in this picture.

Third Lesson: Snow can turn to rain very quickly...See lesson one about painting under a cover.

With my charcoal sketch on a cold, wet easel I decided I've "learned" enough tonight. I've sketched an interesting composition and have enough reference material to finish the painting in the studio.

For me, the value of plein air painting is as much the "process" as the "product"...

It was a fun painting challenge, but I think Mother Nature won this round.

Either way, it was a beautiful night.

Southeastern Wildlife Expo 2010

The 28th Annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is is here.

This weekend the largest wildlife art and nature event in the country will offer various wildlife and art opportunities throughout the Lowcountry.

Although snow is forecast for Friday night, I plan to be out painting and attending events this weekend so I thought I'd post some photos of Lowcountry wildlife from my painting outings this year.

Audubon 13th Annual Backyard Bird Count Feb.12 - 15

The National Audubon Society is asking everyone to join this year's Great Backyard Bird Count Feb. 12 - 15 to count birds in backyards, local parks, and wildlife refuges.

The results of this year's count will help researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Bird Studies Canada learn how bird populations are doing - and how to help them.

While I've been out painting this week, I've seen brown pelicans like the one pictured here sunning on Jeremy Creek in McClellanville, cormorants, anhingas, mallard ducks, widgeons, and one of my all time favorites - the great white egret.

Winter Wolf Moon - An Oil Painting of a Windy Moonlit Night

The first full moon of the New Year is called the "Wolf Moon". The name comes from Native American cultures that believed the added brightness of this full moon caused hungry wolves to be more active.

It's the brightest full moon of the year. Tonight it will be about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than lesser full moons of the year, according to Spaceweather.com.

Here's my painting of this Winter Wolf Moon.. I used a painting knife to keep the painting's surface quality fresh and lively. The loose paint application gives the impression of wind whipped surf and clouds that I experienced on this moonlit night.

A Blue Moon for New Years 2010

The full moon this New Years Eve is a "rare blue moon".
About once every 20 years there are two full moons in in the month of December, thus the popular term - "Blue Moon".

For some strange reason lost in time, the term blue moon has nothing to do with the actual color of the moon, just it's timing in the night sky.
The next one won't appear until the year 2028.

On the event of this New Years Eve's Blue Moon, I'm posting a plein air painting I painted in the moonlight a while back to bring in the New Year 2010.

White Point Gardens Bandstand Restoration Nearing Completion 12.09

I've been asked to post information about the progress of the White Point Gardens bandstand restoration by a reader in England. This is what I saw when I visited the park last week (Nov. 09).

The bandstand foundation has been completed. It supports a lower floor with 5 steps on the east and west sides. Support footings are in place to install the restored original cast iron columns and cornice. Here's a link to a post on the cast iron restoration.

The roof remains suspended waiting to be lowered into place.

Restoration of the bandstand should be completed in January 2010.

Plein Air Charcoal Drawing at the Irvin House Vineyard Festival 2009

It was a beautiful day under the majestic oaks of the Irvin House Vinyard for the annual "Blessing of the Vines" Festival.

The Reverend Gregg Snyder from St. Johns Episcopal Church led a progressive blessing of the winery buildings, the grape vines, the Irvin family and gathered guests.
It was a spirited event with participants following Father Snyder around the vineyard adding rousing acclamations to each of the blessings.
After the blessing ceremony, all returned to picnic under the trees, enjoying the beautiful weather, live music, food, wine and craftsman displays.

Plein Air Paint Out at Charleston Vineyard 11.14.09

Grab your paint brushes, drawing materials, or camera and head out to Charleston's only domestic winery the Irvine - House Winery and Vineyard this Sat (11.14.09) to join local artists who will be attending at the 7th annual Blessing of the Vines Festival. In addition to providing a great opportunity to paint en plein air "in the fresh air", the festival will include blessing of the vines, live music, wine, and a BBQ cook off.

A Visit to the Coastal Carolina Fair Youth Art Show 2009

It's Fall and time for the 53ed Annual Coastal Carolina Fair!

My family and I always enjoy the fair food, entertainment, and exhibits. This year the evening fireworks display over the lake was spectacular!

One of the most popular exhibits at the fair is the Youth Art Show which displays artwork in a wide range of styles by students 6 to 18yrs old from Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties.

The fair presents numerous ribbons and awards which are highly prized by their young recipients. For the past 14 yrs. my husband and I have had the pleasure of sponsoring an award at this Youth Art Show "to recognize outstanding talent as well as to encourage the further growth and development of promising young artists".

Oil Painters of America 5th Annual "Great Paint Out" 2009 at Poplar Grove Plantation, Charleston, SC

Members of the Oil Painters of America (OPA) gathered at Poplar Grove Plantation near Charleston, SC for a weekend of plein air painting in celebration of OPA's 5th Annual "Great Paint Out".

The event provided participating artists from SC (and Ga.) the opportunity to paint in a setting of beautiful SC Lowcountry vistas at the site of one of the oldest former rice plantations in SC.

Artists Kay Schneider, Bill Davidson, Sara Jane Reynolds, Caroline Francis, Mary Edna Fraser, June Seel, Christopher Sherry,and art enthusiasts Sparky Howard and Robin Heutess gathered in the afternoon on the dock at Rantowles Creek to paint and visit.

Event organizer Sara Jane "Sally" Reynolds, June Seel, and Robin Huetess enjoying the creek views.

This year's paint out included music by visual and performing artist Mary Edna Fraser and Anne Goold.

Mary Edna and Anne entertained the artists with spirituals and folk songs, with the painters joining in for a chorus or two.

As the afternoon light faded from the creek, everyone agreed that the beautiful music added greatly to the creative experience of the day.

Hanging the 25th "People's Choice Art Exhibit" 2009

The theme for this year's 25th annual People's Choice Art Exhibit sponsored by First Federal and The Center for Women is "Art and Soul of a Woman, Celebrating the Female Spirit".

Along with the other members of the exhibitions committee, I spent the afternoon organizing and hanging over 100 show entries.

The works by the exhibiting members of the Charleston Art Guild represent or symbolize women in deed, spirit, or appearance in a broad range of styles and media.

I will be on hand for the opening of the exhibit tomorrow Oct. 2, 2009 at First Federal, 34 Broad St. Charleston, SC from 9am to 5 pm. The Exhibit is also part of the Charleston Art Walk tomorrow evening (Oct. 2, 09) from 6 - 8 pm. Light refreshments and libations will be served.

The 25th People's Choice Art Exhibit will be on display at First Federal 34 Broad St. Oct. 2 - 14 2009 during weekday business hours 9am to 5pm.

"Mossy Marsh Oak" A Plein Air Painting Using a Toned Surface

In my plein air painting "Mossy Marsh Oak", I used a warm color on the painting surface to enrich my oil paint. The warm tone of the canvas adds contrast to the cool blues and greens in the landscape. It also gives impact to the highlights in the Live Oak, Spanish moss, and marsh.

The painting panel was prepared several days earlier and allowed to dry.
Once on location, I lightly sketched the scene in charcoal on my painting surface.
Next, I worked over the sketch with thinned oil paint to establish the composition.

I then painted the horizon line, marsh and sky. The form of oak tree in the foreground was painted last, to build on the values of the sky and middle ground marsh.

As the afternoon sun began to set, I was able to see the last rays of the sun highlighting the marsh, creek and live oak. These highlights were added quickly by "etching" into the layer of oil paint revealing the warm tone of the panel.

I hope you like the result of "planned spontaneity" by using a pretoned canvas in this plein air painting of sunlight on a Mossy Marsh Oak.

"Late Summer In the Marsh" Plein Air Drawing and Painting by a Lowcountry Creek

There's a hint of fall in the Lowcountry this week. The weather is perfect for plein air painting in the marsh with a slight breeze and no bugs.

I started with a preliminary charcoal drawing of the marsh scene before painting. I often bring my sketch book to work out design issues in a composition. Drawing is a useful tool - it sharpens artistic observation and is a good "creative warm up" for painting.

Here's the final plein air painting of the marsh scene in oil. I've adjusted the composition to include the bend in the creek. This change leads the viewer's eye from the foreground around the bend of the creek into the marsh rather than off the page as in the earlier charcoal drawing. I've also lowered the horizon line to include more sky.

Painting is a "process" as well as a "product". Hope you like the result.

"Shrimp Trawler on the Creek" Use of Color and Value Contrast

The painting "Shrimp Trawler on the Creek" is an alla prima oil painting I'm working on for an upcoming show.
In it, I've used value and color contrast to portray sunlight breaking through storm clouds over a Lowcountry creek. The yellow of the afternoon sun contrasts with the dark blue of the storm clouds adding a sense of drama and visual interest to this otherwise peaceful scene.
The painting is is one of several new pieces in progress to be included in a show I'm having this fall in Charleston.

A visitor to the studio says it reminds him of one of his grandmother's nursery ditties "Shrimp Boats Is A-Coming". It's a charming old southern folk song with these lyrics:
"Shrimp boats is a-coming there's dancing tonight. Shrimp boats is a-coming there's dancing tonight. Won't you hurry, hurry, hurry home. Won't you hurry, hurry, hurry home. Shrimp boats is a-coming there's dancing tonight".

Riley Iron Works Foundry Origin of 1907 White Point Gardens Bandstand

Recent restoration of the circa 1907 bandstand at White Point Gardens has revealed a foundry mark with Charleston origins on the bases of the cast iron columns.
Dustin Clemens, Project Manager of the White Point Gardens Restoration Project for the City of Charleston Parks Dept. took this photo of the John F Riley Iron Works foundry stamp from a bandstand column undergoing restoration on Aug. 13, 2009.

A John F Riley operated his foundry on South St. in Chas. in the early 1900's according to research by Dr. Nicholas Butler, Manager of the Charleston Archive at the Chas. Co. Library. This John F Riley was the brother of Andrew J. Riley, the grandfather of Charleston's present mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr.

Aug. 15, 2009, I had a chance to see the restoration work in progress at Charles Blanchard Construction Co.. Numerous layers of old paint and rust have been removed and a coating of primer paint has been applied to the ironwork. The columns, with the foundry mark now clearly visible after removal of decades of paint are resting on wooden supports awaiting additional repairs.

David Rowland, of TonMar Industries is seen here restoring one of the 8 bandstand arches. The grey areas on the arches indicate the locations of original foundry repairs to the iron work due to casting flaws. These areas are undergoing additional stabilization and restoration.

As a sculptor who has both built and cast from molds, I appreciate the skill and degree of complexity that was involved in casting this ironwork. Looking at the riveted attachments and casting supports inside the iron arches was a trip back in time.

The fact that these cast iron columns and arches of the bandstand have withstood the damaging effects of over 100 years in a subtropical climate of heat, humidity, salt air, and hurricane force winds is a testament to the work of the John F. Riley Iron Works of Charleston, SC.

White Point Gardens Bandstand Renovation Progress Aug. 2009

As of Aug. 2009, restoration work of the White Point Gardens bandstand has removed the circa 1934 foundation and steps, the original cast iron columns, and decorative arches.
The tiled roof has been raised and is presently resting on steel I beams awaiting completion of the new foundation along with re-installation of the original cast iron columns and arches.
The $273,500 price tag to renovate the 1907 bandstand has not gone without comments in this era of widespread economic downturn, however supporters of the project state that the bandstand generates revenue for the city from rental of the space by wedding parties and is an "iconic structure" worthy of restoration.
The band stand has become a prominent landmark and favorite destination for brides and visitors during it's 107 years in White Point Gardens, but some question the need for such extensive rebuilding of the structure rather than a more conservative and less expensive preservation project.

In a recent post to "Paint Charleston Daily", a reader states the following: "The band stand is completely made of cast iron. The casting was done by Riley iron works in 1902. Does anyone know if this is a descendant of the present mayor and what the cost was back then to cast the columns and upper arches? And, where was Riley iron works foundry? David"

I haven't heard of the casting history of the bandstand before this comment. Anyone know any more information about the Riley ironworks foundry? (Click here for my post about Riley Iron Works in Chas, SC).

Painting in the shade of the Washington Oak this afternoon, I was glad I remembered to bring lots of bug spray. With recent summer showers, the mosquitoes were out in force. I was swarmed so badly I'm surprised I have any blood left.

Bug spray and a portable bug zapper improved the situation and I had a wonderful afternoon painting at one of my favorite locations - Hampton Plantation Historical Site.

I had the pleasure of meeting internationally famous author and painter, Kevin Macpherson when he was in Charleston this spring. Mr. Macpherson creates beautiful, award winning paintings using a limited palette of only 3 primary colors (yellow, red, blue) with white. In his books and workshops, he teaches the importance of mixing "harmonious colors and sensitive grays".
Although I like to use a few more "tube" colors on my palette for convenience, I am working on mixing a wider range of grays and neutrals. Here's a photo of my palette showing the mixtures I've been experimenting with recently.
The shadows and sunshine in the painting "Sunshine on Hampton Plantation" gave me an opportunity to try out these new neutral mixtures while working with color harmony and accurate values. I feel the painting succeeds in portraying the effect of light and shadow on the white mansion due to the use of a wide range of warm and cool grays.

I took advantage of the cooler weather today to paint "en plein air" (on location) at Hampton Plantation State Historical Site.
The magnificent "Washington Oak" framing the plantation house's stately front portico with moss draped branches is the subject I chose to paint this afternoon. The tree is said to have been saved from being cut down to provide a better view from the newly built front portico by President George Washington during his visit to Hampton Plantation in 1791.
Now a mighty live oak, the tree was named in his honor.

The lengthening evening shadows falling through the tree's branches and across the front lawn create an interesting value contrast in my plein air painting of Hampton Plantation, the stately home of South Carolina's first poet laureate, Archibald Rutledge.

A White Ribbon Tribute to Master Blacksmith Philip Simmons

Master Blacksmith/Artisan Mr. Philip Simmons' passing at age 97 has resulted in plans to honor his long and productive life in the SC Lowcountry. For many years Charleston has proudly recognized the talents of this native son who has spent a lifetime creating beautiful ironwork for local homes and gardens.
In his honor, the city is hanging white ribbons on all of Mr. Simmons public ironworks.

While Mr. Simmons's beautiful downtown gates and decorative public ironwork are widely known, he also produced many smaller, less recognized works such as the wrought iron handrails designed for "Afterglow", the Mt. Pleasant home of the Muschick family.

When asked if he would accept a modest project at the home, Mr. Simmons replied to Mrs. Rose Muschick that "no project is too small". "That's what I do" was his cheerful reply.
The resulting pairs of graceful wrought iron handrails have been beautiful additions to this home and garden for many years.

In his honor at his passing, the family has hung white ribbons on these two pair of smaller but greatly admired and appreciated wrought iron handrails designed and installed by Mr. Simmons and his apprentice.

He will live on in the memory of those who admire him and his distinctive artwork in iron.

"Farmland by Angel Oak" An Oil Painting of Vanishing Rural Fields

This is a painting of farmland directly across the winding dirt road from the ancient Angel Oak.
The future of this and other farmland on rural John's Island, SC is of great concern due to encroaching development.
Recent plans to build 630 housing units on 42 acres surrounding the Angel Oak have residents concerned about the long term impact of this development on the rural environment of Johns Island and the magnificent Angel Oak tree.

Here is my plein air painting (painted on location) created during a "paint out" at Angel Oak Park.

The developers will be presenting their latest plans for the Angel Oak Village Development to the Charleston Commercial Corridor Design Review Board this Thursday (6/ 25/09) at 5:00 in the 3ed Floor meeting room at 75 Calhoun St. Chas, SC.
Yesterdays editorial in the Post and Courier titled "Stay Vigilant for Angel Oak"advises "those who are interested in the long term well-being of the Angel Oak to get a close look at what developer Robert DeMoura now has in mind for the tract and let the board hear their thoughts." At issue are the architectural design plans and the development's density. The development also has not yet been awarded necessary environmental permits.
It's not too late to have a voice in this critical issue that affects not only the health of the irreplaceable National treasure "Angel Oak" but also the quality of life on rural Johns Island.

A Plein Air Charcoal Drawing of Hampton Plantation

This charcoal and mixed media drawing of Hampton Plantation was created in the shade of the magnificent Washington Oak on the grounds of the Hampton Plantation Historic Site.

In the drawing, the graceful curve of the live oak tree in the foreground leads the viewer's eye through overhanging branches swaying with Spanish moss to the portico of the mansion. The last rays of the afternoon sun cast a soft light on the white columns and front steps inviting the viewer to come and rest a while on the porch.

Hampton Plantation was given to the South Carolina State Park Service by SC Poet Laureate Archibald Rutledge and his family in 1971. The mansion was built in the 1740's with the addition of a beautiful Adam style portico (porch) modeled after Hampton House in England in 1791.

The Live Oak tree in my drawing is called "The Washington Oak" in honor of President George Washington. During his visit to Hampton Plantation in 1791, the President was asked if he thought the tree blocked the view from the newly built portico. Washington replied that he like the tree and it was saved.

Charleston Waterspout

Reports today (6.07.09) of a waterspout spotted over the water in Charleston reminded me of a similar sighting I had of another waterspout in Charleston.
I'm posting artwork I created from my impressions of the waterspout I sighted in Charleston Harbor several years ago. This etching (or "printed painting") is one in a group of artworks I made entitled "The Storm Series". In creating the etching "Waterspout", I used value changes and broad, diagonal strokes to express my impression of the wind and ominous cloud formations I experienced viewing the event.

Although waterspouts rarely last more than a few minutes, cause widespread damage, or make landfall, they are still an alarming natural event. The sight of a large, churning funnel cloud heading toward land is a unnerving and memorable sight - even for a "hurricane hardened" viewer like myself.

South Carolina Tramp Brigade Living History Group Camps at Fort Moultrie

Living historians from the SC Tramp Brigade were among several groups of historical interpreters participating in events at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island today.
The groups are portraying life at the Fort during the period from 1809-1860 ( mainly 1859) when the US Army Regulars were stationed at Fort Moultrie prior to the War Between the States.

The historians are conducting artillery drills, demonstrating firing muskets, and portraying the daily life of 19th century soldiers and their families. Demonstrations and camp activities will continue tomorrow from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

I had the pleasure of visiting with visiting living historians Marvin Greer (from Ga.) and Joe Blunt (from Fla.) as they relaxed in their camp after today's activities.

I also met Tina Temm from Alabama as she passed out ginger snaps after supper in camp. Tina and the other member's historically accurate clothes and camp life style create a window into the early 19th century life at Fort Moultrie that is both entertaining and educational.

For my drawing of a soldier relaxing in camp after supper, I used charcoal to recreate the look of a 19th century "field sketch". In the 1800's, it was common for newspapers to hire artists to travel to locations and create drawings to be used for illustrations.

Hanging Artwork for the 2009 Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition

Artwork was delivered and hung for the 25th Annual Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition at the Charleston Visitor Center today.

I was on hand along with other members of the Charleston Artist Guild to receive and hang the 100 artworks selected by jurors Dr. Leo Twiggs (Painting/2D artwork) and Stacy Pearsall (Photography) from over 394 show entries. I feel fortunate to be one of two artists to have work accepted into both the Painting and Photography categories this year.

The Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition is sponsored by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs and coordinated by the Charleston Artist Guild.
The Exhibition is free and open to the public between the hours of 8:30 to 5:00 during the run of Piccolo Spoleto and Spoleto Festival USA, May 22 through June 5 at the Charleston Visitor Center, 375 Meeting St. Charleston, SC.

McClellanville Arts Center Youth Art Exhibition 2009

It was an evening to celebrate the talents of young people in McClellanville, SC at the McClellanville Arts Center on Pinckney St. tonight. Susan Williams past president, McClellanville Arts Council was on hand to greet guests including Bud Hill, director of The Village Museum to the reception and awards ceremony for "Coming of Age: McClellanville Youth Art Exhibit in Memory of Alice Wyndham".

Visual arts, creative writing and musical performance were featured from the area schools of Archibald Rutledge Academy, Lincoln High School, McClellanville Middle School and St. James -Santee Elem. School.
The evenings activities included performances by guitarist Vincent White, vocalist Anna Dupre, and poetry readings by local youths including Amber Dewitt (pictured).

The Awards Ceremony began with a tribute by Bernadette Humphries, McClellanville Art Center Director to Alice Wyndham (pictured in portrait) who proposed a Young Peoples Exhibition prior to her death. The 2009 McClellanville Youth Art Exhibition is dedicated to her service and devotion to the Arts.

Guests had been given ballots and asked to vote for their favorite artwork from each school. The winners of the Peoples Choice Awards are: Gerald Welch- Archibald Rutledge Academy, Ronald Walker-Lincoln High School, Mia Mitchell - McClellanville Middle School, and Olivia McBride -St. James Santee Elem. School. Jeanne Edwards Awards for Excellence in the Arts were presented to Travis Blake, Summer Cumbee,and Vincent White. Lauren Oree was awarded a special "Award of Merit" for her poem "Alone".
The evening concluded with well deserved recognition for the efforts of teachers and representatives from the schools in supporting the creative talents of their students. Pictured are: Lynn Vickery -Archibald Rutledge Academy, Annie Purvis - Lincoln High School, Ramona LaRoche - St. James Santee Elem., Humphries, and J.B. Ritchie - McClellanville Middle School.

I sketched in the Biblical Garden at Magnolia Plantation on the day after Good Friday, surrounded by plants that are mentioned in the Bible. This small formal garden is a hidden gem tucked into one of the largest Romantic Gardens in the country. It's the second year I've painted here on the Saturday after Good Friday.

"Easter Vigil" is a charcoal drawing of a statue of Mary standing in the center of 12 small square flower beds designed to form the shape of a cross. The 12 flower beds are symbolic of the 12 Disciples of Christ.

The deep shadows and sharp contrasts in my charcoal drawing make me think of Mary as she watched and prayed on that dark day before The Resurrection.

The International Camellia Society "Camellia of the Month", C. japonica "Princess" (?) April 2009

The subject of my painting "Camellia in the Rain" is a bloom from a bush highlighted as "Camellia of the Month" by the International Camellia Society (ICS) for April 2009.

The International Camellia Society is a non-profit organization with over 2,000 members worldwide. It is the official registrar for the genus Camellia and maintains the International Camellia Register in addition to publishing the yearly "International Camellia Journal ".

On the Society's website @ http://www.camellia-ics.org is a photograph of the camellia and information about the plant's recent history in the Charleston garden of Mrs. Rose Muschick.

As with many varieties of older heritage camellias, the ancestry of this plant is an open question. Information about the plant from camellia growers, horticulturists, or flora-culturalists is welcomed.

"Plantation Smoke House" A Plein Air Painting of a Historic Outbuilding at Hobcaw Barony

"Plantation Smokehouse" is my plein air painting of a historic outbuilding at Hobcaw Barony, a Historic National Site and research reserve of the Bell W. Baruch Foundation.

In the painting, shadows play on the white side of the smoke house, as Spanish moss sways in the breeze from nearby Winyah Bay.
I used color contrasts and value changes to direct the viewer's eye from the moss filled tree at left, across the smokehouse and off through the shadows to the water in the distance.

Hobcaw Barony is composed of land that was granted in 1718 as a "barony" to English royalty. It was later sold and subdivided into plantations extending from the Waccamaw River to the Atlantic Ocean. The word "Hobcaw" is a Native American term meaning "between the waters".

The antebellum smokehouse at Hobcaw was used to cure game caught by the hunting parties to the Barony when it was used as a winter hunting retreat by Bernard Baruch in the early 1900's . Duck, turkey, deer, quail, foxes, and wild boar were hunted by distinguished guests, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill .

"Friendfield Slave Village Church" plein air painting amid preservation work

Friendfield Village was home to enslaved Africans and later freedman who lived in the cabins from the early 1800's until 1952. In addition to homes, the village eventually included a school house, doctor's office, and church. The church at Friendfield was built in 1890 with the addition of the bell tower in 1905.

I had the privileged of joining artists from the Plein Air Landscape Society (PALS) to paint on location at Hobcaw Barony, a 17,500 acre research reserve and historic site managed by the Belle W. Baruch Foundation.

As we painted, work was in progress to preserve and stabilize the wood structures in this former slave community.

Brick footings and fireplaces have been strengthened, roofs repaired and cabins painted.

As at other historic sites in the SC Lowcountry (click here for Magnolia Plantation Slave Cabin Restoration Project), the Belle W. Baruch Foundation realizes the value of preserving the buildings at Friendfield Village to show how enslaved Africans lived on this southern plantation during the days of growing "Carolina Gold" rice in tidal rice fields during the 1800's and later as freedman descendants of slaves continued to live and work on the land when it became a winter hunting retreat in the 20th century. I'm renewing my effort on this oil painting of two young girls who are members of a singing group which performs spiritual and sacred music of the SC Lowcountry. Originally I planned to leave the painting loose and "sketchy", but think I'll add a bit more finish to the work.

I've been inspired to resume my efforts by seeing the work of three accomplished artists -Nancy Guzik, Susan Lyon, and Mary Whyte. Each painter brings a sense of spontaneity and freshness to their work which is built on mastery of draftsmanship, paint handling and creative vision.
All three artists have had their artwork featured in recent publications for the members of the Portrait Society of America of which I'm a member. Check out their work and be inspired too.

Charcoal Drawing of the" Little Dancer" Statue at White Point Gardens

Spring has sprung in Charleston. People relaxed on benches and blankets, as I drew in my sketchbook at White Point Gardens today.
Here's my charcoal drawing of the "Little Dancer" bronze statue by the accomplished 20th century Charleston sculptor Willard Hirsch at the Children's Fountain in White Point Gardens.

Although a popular attraction for children of all ages visiting the Battery, it's not widely known (because the City Of Charleston has never installed a dedication plaque- click here for article) that the 20" statue was created for the fountain in 1962 from a figure Mr. Hirsch had designed about 15 years earlier. It was cast in bronze in New York and installed on a granite base placed lower to the ground for easy access by children.
Also significant is the fact that the "Little Dancer" statue at the fountain is included in the Smithsonian Institution Inventory of American Sculpture. Click here for link to Siris.

Charlestonian Sallie C. Carrington was the generous benefactor who requested the drinking fountain be dedicated to "The Children of Charleston".

Channel 4 (ABC) News reporter Neville Miller and cameraman Shamir Bryan were also at the park. The men were hard at work surveying people on preferences for a state marine mammal - the Right Whale or Bottle nosed Dolphin.

When I asked to take their picture, cameraman Shamir Bryan said he's not used to being on the other side of a camera, but was a good sport and even held the "Little Dancer's" hand as he and Neville took time out for a photo.

Charleston White Point Gardens Renovations

The Bandstand at White Point Gardens is one of the most recognized structures in Charleston. Its charming setting among graceful live oaks near Charleston Harbor makes it a frequent subject of photo's and painting's of Historic Charleston.
Yesterday (3.3.09), the City of Charleston announced an $885,000 project to improve White Point Gardens which includes plans to renovate and restore the 102 yr. old bandstand. A $273,500 contract will include repairs to the 1907 structure's brickwork and will lower the base from its present 6 ft. elevation to the original 3 ft.

I'm posting my recent ink drawing of the bandstand with its 6 foot tall platform rising from ground. I'll need to redraw the structure in the future when the base of the bandstand is lowered 3 feet.

Although it will be nice to see the restoration, I wonder if the bandstand will look quite as grand or provide as nice a view when it's lowered 3 feet to the ground.

Hopefully the White Point Garden renovation plan can be modified to include the long overdue placement of a plaque to identify the Charleston Children's Fountain (click here for article) and its beloved "Little Dancer" bronze statue by Charleston sculptor Willard N. Hirsch.

Camellias in a Charleston Garden

Winter is the time for Camellias to bloom in Lowcountry gardens. The Coastal Carolina Camellia Society (2009 Show) says there are now over 20,000 named varieties of Camellias with more being introduced every year. With so many new varieties available to gardeners, the older varieties-referred to as heritage or ancient camellias are sometimes overshadowed by the newcomers.

For over 50 years my mother, Rose N. Muschick has diligently collected and cared for an ever growing collection of camellias in her Lowcountry garden. Many of her camellias were gifts from friends who have long since passed away.

I was in her garden today painting some of the many varieties currently in bloom. Here's a painting of a "Camellia in the Rain" that I painted from a flower on a bush that is one of her older, "historical" varieties of camellias. I think the variety was named "Princess".
I've asked several camellia growers if this is the correct name for the variety but they are unsure due to it's age. These camellias look as if they have a gold "crown" rising from the center of the bloom.

A few of her camellia bushes have so many blooms the branches can hardly hold them.
What a cheerful sight in the middle of winter.

Charleston Artist Guild "Nature's Beauty" Exhibition at SEWE 2009

For the first time in 27 years, SEWE will include artists from the Charleston Artists Guild (CAG) in an art show and sale entitled "Nature's Beauty" presenting original artwork depicting the outdoors. CAG Director of Exhibitions, Russell Buskirk has done an outstanding job organizing this groundbreaking show with SEWE Art Director, Lindy Shealy.

As an Exhibitions Committee member, I was at the Charleston Marriott's Emerald Ballroom today as artists registered and hung the show. I caught up with CAG Past President Norma Morris Ballentine and Buskirk who were busy hanging paintings and discussing the show. Both artists are exhibiting new works focusing on the Lowcountry.

Artists participating in the show organize their artwork before the opening of the 27th Annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition Feb. 13 - 15, 2009.

"Garden Bridge in Winter" A New Painting by Katherine M Schneider

A long white bridge crossing the dark waters of a cypress pond is a favorite view of visitors to Magnolia Gardens. The graceful curves of the bridge contrast with the straight trunks of cypress trees reflected in the dark water. It's a memorable sight.

The vista is often painted with brightly colored azaleas in the Spring. It's rarely painted when the rich colors of Autumn reflect in the bright winter light on the pond, as I have here.

The painting is one of six artworks I have entered in the 2009 Winter Garden Festival Art Show at Magnolia Gardens Jan. 24 - Feb. 28th. The Plantation Gallery Gift Shop is located on the ground level of the Manor House.

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens Winter Festival 2009 - Art Show Opening Reception

The paintings were hung, tea was served, and plein air artists painted at the opening of the 2009 Magnolia Gardens Winter Festival.
Here's an ink drawing I sketched today of the entrance to the Plantation Gift Shop and Gallery. Covered by the large second story porch, the entrance to the Gift Shop and Gallery is a dry spot to sketch on a rainy day.

Artists painted throughout the gardens, including the lawn in front of the Plantation House.
At 6:00 pm Charleston Artist Guild (CAG) member, Dab (www.Dabism.com)was still painting in the misting rain. He said it takes about an hour to set up his elaborate plein air equipment, but then he is ready to paint in any weather.

The Art Gallery is full of exciting new artwork by members of the Chas. Artist Guild who will be at the Gardens painting tomorrow and throughout the Winter Festival, January 23 - Feb.28th. New paintings(Click here) will continue to be added to the show as they are created by the artists.

A Charcoal Drawing of a Mossy Live Oak

Few things are as relaxing as sitting under an ancient live oak watching the Spanish moss sway in the breeze as sunlight shines through the leafy canopy.
Ancient Live Oaks seem to have a magic all their own. It's in their leaves and branches and huge, twisting trunks. It's in the grey moss and soft, filtered sunlight moving on the ground underneath. Live Oaks are one of Nature's best creations.

After a busy holiday season, drawing in the peace and quiet of this oak lined dirt road at Magnolia Gardens was a real pleasure.

I hope you too will feel the relaxing effect of the swaying Spanish moss in this plein air drawing of an ancient oak at Magnolia Plantation.

Magnolia Gardens Winter Festival 2009 - Plein Air Drawing and Painting

I was back out at Magnolia Plantation this afternoon drawing and painting the path to the Manor House in preparation for upcoming Art Shows during the Winter Garden Festival 2009.

This year, there will be two exhibits during the festival. Original artwork created this year in the Winter Garden will be showcased in the Art Gallery at the Manor House Gift Shop. On Sat. Jan. 24, there will be Afternoon Tea from 1-5 pm to meet the artists and see the new artwork. The artwork will remain in the gallery until March 31. (See gallery here.)

The second show will be a Juried Exhibition and sale in the Carriage House at Magnolia Gardens entitled "The Girl with the Gold Earring". Magnolia Plantation is sponsoring this exhibit to highlight a recently found gold artifact at an archeological dig on the plantation. This show will be on display from Feb. 2 - Feb. 19, 2009.

Weather permitting, I will be painting en plein air in the gardens with painters from The Charleston Artist Guild and The Charleston Out Door Painters Asso. Jan. 24, 2009.

Three Generations of a Lowcountry Family at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

Members of the Leach family have lived and worked at Magnolia Plantation for generations Their family story is an important part of a new project at Magnolia Plantation to tell the history of the men and women who have worked here for over three centuries.

At 86, Mr. Johnny Leach is still an active member of the Magnolia Gardens staff. Mr. Isaac Leach (age 50) keeps the gardens beautiful for visitors by working on insect and disease control on the many historic plant species, in addition to maintaining the properties numerous ponds. Jackson Leach (age 18) works in grounds keeping and will be a historical interpreter when the newly restored cabins are open to the public.

Isaac, Jackson, and Mr. Johnny Leach revisited their former home on what they refer to as "the street" today to see the work that has been done to restore the cabins.
Mr. Leach (on the left) shows his son and grandson the addition to the old family cabin he built by himself over 50 years ago. He rigged a special rope pulling system to lift the metal sheets onto the roof by himself. Isaac Leach remembers a large wooden barrel that was used to white wash the cabin many years ago when he was a boy. All three men lived in the cabin, although Jackson was only 2 when he moved with his family to a new home.

New staff members meet with the Leach's at "the Street". Historical interpreter Preston Cooley and Managing Site Historian D.J. Tucker discuss plans for the historical sites opening in February with Jackson, Johnny, and Isaac Leach.

I'll post today's plein air drawing from the site tomorrow.
As both an artist and a former Park Ranger Historian with the National Park Service who interpreted the history of Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter in the 70's, I'm enjoying meeting those who are involved in the development of this historic site. When it's completed, Slave Cabin Row (aka "The Street") will be a unique addition to the history of the Lowcountry, telling the story of how the lives of workers on a southern plantation changed through the years from the colonial era up to the present.

Slave Cabin Row Restoration Project at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens 2008

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens has completed restoration work on 5 slave cabins at "Slave Cabin Row".
On a recent plein air painting trip, I was given a tour of the site by Kevin Meek, owner of Rock Creek Craftsmen. His company has restored the cabins at Magnolia to show the evolving story of enslaved Africans and later freedman living in the structures from the Colonial period up to recent history (1969). Each of the cabins on Slave Cabin Row has been restored to demonstrate the building materials and living conditions of a different historical period.

Magnolia Plantation is the only Lowcountry Historical site that has cabins showing the changing conditions of the workers and buildings as life on the plantation changed over time.

Connolly, Meek, and Project Technician Kate Fowler are pictured by the Leach Family cabin. Members of the Leach family (click here for photo's of the Leach family) lived in this cabin until 1969. The oral history from members of the Leach family who are still working at Magnolia Plantation will be included in the historical interpretation of the site.
At this time the cabins are unfurnished, but the project includes plans to add historic objects to at least one of the buildings.

I, along with other exhibiting members of the Charleston Artist Guild, have been invited to create new paintings of the winter garden to exhibit during the 2009 Winter Garden Festival in the Plantation Gallery and Gift Shop.

The restoration project unearthed an artifact of particular interest. A handcrafted 14 caret gold object about the size of a cuff link was found in an area where the oldest cabins once existed.
The artifact may have had various uses, possibly as an earring. The owner of the gold artifact is a mystery as is it's origin.

Here are photos of my mortar and pestle and spinning wheel (circa 1800) in the cabin. Both are similar to those which would have been used on the plantation in the Colonial Era.

I think they add an interesting element to the story about the lives of the people who lived on Slave Cabin Row at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. For information about the restoration work of former slave cabins at Friendfield Village click here.

"Misty Morning on the Creek" A New Plein Air Painting by Katherine M. Schneider

I returned to the tidal creek at Poplar Grove I tried to paint last year. Click here to see that painting.

This time I decided to paint the creek on a misty morning rather than in the late afternoon sunlight.

The finished painting shows the creek filling with the incoming tide on a misty winter morning. I like the effect the mist and rain give to the marsh in the far distance. The gray light coming through the clouds makes the marsh grass and trees seem softer too.

I used my car's back hatch to keep dry while painting in the wet weather. Here's a photo of my canvas with some of the paint wiped down to the sienna colored under painting. This time out, I knew I'd have to focus first on painting the tidal water coming into the creek. This is a shallow creek and the water level changes very quickly. Notice the change in the water level and the disappearing creek banks compared to the painting in this photo taken at the end of the painting session.

While I was painting , John Tarkany the owner of the land on the left side of the creek came by to chat. As a Landscape Architect, he has a special appreciation of the beauty of his creek side property.
I enjoyed a tour of the property with a lively discussion of its history and horticulture.

This creek has a special feel that has to be experienced to be appreciated.

New Moon - New Year 2009

This is the view I had from my back porch tonight New Year's Eve 2008. It's a beautiful crescent new moon with Venus (the planetary star) seen in the evening sky over the SC state tree, the Palmetto - a scene beloved by many South Carolinians including me.

There's a lot going on, so I 'm posting this "fine art photograph" in lieu of a painting tonight.

"Christmas Lights on Shem Creek" - A New Painting by Katherine M Schneider

Christmas is a time for boat owners in Charleston to decorate their boats for the annual "Parade of Lights" in Charleston Harbor.

I recently saw a decorated sailboat docked by a popular seafood restaurant on Shem Creek.
The sight left me with a strong impression of the colorful lights hanging from the boat's rigging in the night sky and the bright reflections of the lights in the dark creek water.

I began working on the painting "Christmas Lights on Shem Creek" from drawings and photos back in the light and warmth of my studio. Here's a quick look into my studio set up for working in pastels.

My pastel taboret is custom built to hold many different types of pastels and drawing materials.

It's a design developed by master pastel artist, Daniel Greene, with whom I studied in New York.

The base of the taboret is made from an antique cast iron drawing stand that was used by the Charleston sculptor, Willard Hirsch, with whom I also studied.

When working in pastels I often use prepared pastel panels such as Ampersand pastel boards. I use many layers of pastel, often working into them with water and bristle brushes. I've found panels are sturdier than paper supports when using these vigorous pastel techniques.

For this painting, I used a grey sanded panel. I began with a light drawing in a mid tone, grey hard pastel to reserve the "tooth" of the painting surface for additional layers of softer pastel.

I worked from mid to lighter and darker values to establish the composition, checking often in a mirror to correct drawing errors and adjust my values.

A folded newspaper "dust catcher" under my forward tilted painting keeps excess pastel dust from falling onto the floor where it can become a toxic hazard if tracked around by shoes.
Barrier cream or plastic gloves are useful to keep pastel dust off my hands.

Although safeguards are important when working with pastels and the dust they produce, modern production techniques and less toxic pigments have made them safer to use.

The purity of the pigments and intensity of color in pastel paintings makes them well worth the extra effort in care and handling.

Christmas Lights -Creative Holiday "Art Installations"

I enjoyed doing a little "extra research" for my painting in progress of Christmas Lights on Shem Creek" by visiting the amazing holiday art installation in the yard of Santa's twin, Eddie Brown.

Every Christmas, Eddie and his wife Nancy brighten the town of Mt. Pleasant with their creative display of holiday lights at their home.
This week, I was one of the many visitors who was inspired by the Brown's warm holiday spirit and decorations.Thanks for the candy cane, Nancy and Eddie!

Christmas Lights on Shem Creek in the Charleston Lowcountry

For years the docks at Shem Creek have been the best place in town to get local seafood - fresh off the boats.

Shem Creek remains a popular place to eat seafood and watch the boats come in, although these days the boats are more often pleasure craft than working trawlers.

At Christmas, many boat owners decorate their boats with holiday lights for the annual "Parade of Lights" in Charleston Harbor.

I'll post my painting of the sparkling lights reflecting in the dark waters of Shem Creek soon.

"Spicy Christmas Treats" A Pastel Painting by Charleston Artist Katherine M Schneider

Have you ever smelled an orange studded with dried cloves? The wonderful, spicy fragrance is a favorite at Christmastime.

In Colonial days, the clove studded fruit was allowed to dry out and then used in linen presses as a fragrant pomander the rest of the year.

In my painting "Spicy Christmas Treats", I used the directional lines of the cloves to add interest and variety to the composition.

The oranges in the painting will add a fresh fragrance to my home and studio throughout the holiday. I've also found that they make much appreciated gifts.

If you have the time, try making one. Pierce an orange with an ice pick or other sharp object to get through the rind, then push in a piece of dried clove. The more cloves you use, the more fragrant the pomander. Enjoy!

Charleston Christmas Lights Brighten the Night and the Season

The annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony took place in Marion Square tonight to the delight of children of all ages.

Countless Christmas trees of all shapes and descriptions shone in the night at Marion Square.

Christmas trees decorated by children from many of the Charleston area schools lined the paths in the park.

The glow from the Christmas lights can be seen all the way to the North Pole and beyond.

A walk into the "Christmas Tree of Lights" was a popular spot for picture taking and "twirling".

The effect of being surrounded by hundreds of bright Christmas lights is not to be missed.

Spinning in circles inside the lights was a dizzying delight for many visitors under the tree tonight.

It's a great start to the Christmas Season in Charleston for young and old..

COPA Plein Air Painters at Angel Oak

COPA (The Charleston Outdoor Painters Association) painted on location at Angel Oak today. The artists withstood bombardment by falling acorns in windy and damp weather to paint en plein air at this ancient tree.

The subject proved especially challenging in the morning's frequently changing light conditions. During breaks from painting, the painters enjoyed sharing plein air tips and helpful critiques on the works in progress.

Karen Silvestro's use of warm and cool colors added depth and color harmony to her painting.

Ryoko Miller started her painting with large abstract forms which she refined into a more detailed artistic statement of the tree.

Lisa Willits,
worked fast laying in her composition quickly with a warm tone on a linen panel.

Teri Bastian used a grid on her canvas to develop her composition.

Visitors to Angel Oak added appreciative remarks as they watched the artists creating unique paintings "en plein air" of the majestic live oak.

Painting surfaces and supports - How to build a better painting

I've been preparing canvases and painting panels this week getting ready to create new paintings for several upcoming shows. I hope today's post about the preparation of painting surfaces will be helpful for the students in a high school art class whom I've been told read this blog.

The quality of a painting and it's ability to withstand environmental damage depends in large part on the materials used under the surface layers of oil paint.

For smaller paintings and plein air works, I prefer the strength of wood. A painting on a properly prepared wooden surface will last indefinitely. Since the 6th century BC, wood panels have been used as painting surfaces. The major drawback to using wood as a support is it's ability to hold moisture. Modern plywood panels eliminate many of the problems of warping and cracking associated with older wood panels. (Canvas on a wood panel is also good.) Any wood panel over 16"x 20" should be cradled (reinforced) on the back to prevent warping. Applying gesso to the sides and back of the panel will also reduce warping.

First, sand the panel to remove imperfections.

Next, apply a good quality gesso. I use the Gamblin or Utreck brands because they are both highly pigmented. More pigment in the ground reduces the dulling effect on oil paint and seals the support (wood or canvas) from chemical and environmental deterioration.

Allow the gesso to dry. Apply at least 2 to 3 coats of gesso , sanding between each layer. This ensures the gesso has coated and sealed the painting support making a stable foundation for the layers of paint and varnish in the final painting.

I like to paint on a toned surface. Here I'm applying a warm burnt sienna undertone to the panting support. Using an undertone layer of paint reduces the absorbency of the surface and can be used in many ways to enhance the final painting.

I use a warm toned surface for my plein air paintings and landscapes. The warm tone enriches the cool blues and greens found in nature. Notice the warm undertone showing in the "etched" lines of the path, bench, and grass.

For portrait painting, a cool green-gray undertone works well to complement warm skin tones in the finished painting.

Whether working on wood panels or canvas, it's good practice to apply at least 3 coats of gesso, a layer of oil ground (if desired for oils on a rigid surface), and a thin undertone to build a strong foundation for a painting that will last many years.

Face to Face with Art at the Coastal Carolina Fair Youth Art Show 2008

A brightly painted face was seen enjoying the brightly colored paintings at the Coastal Carolina Fair Youth Art Show.

Wesley King (lf to rt) and his cousin Arianna sported festive face paint as they picked out their favorite artwork during the last night of the 2008 Youth Art Show.

"Four Way Still Life" by their friend Pinewood Preparatory School artist Samantha Freedman.

Lori Zinger- show attendant answers questions about the artwork for visitors. With over 600 entries in this years show, Lori was helpful finding artwork for the many visitors to the Show.

The Youth Art Show is a wonderful opportunity for local art teachers and student artists to exhibit their talents to a large audience. Last year the attendance at the Coastal Carolina Fair was over 200,000 visitors.

Beyond these doors of the Fine Arts Building at the Coastal Carolina Fair hangs the 2008 Youth Art Show. Each year the Exchange Club of Charleston sponsors an exhibition of artwork at the Coastal Carolina Fair by student artists from Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties.

This year (2008), the Youth Art Show includes nearly 600 artworks showcasing a wide variety of styles and media. The artwork is displayed in groups by age from 6 to 18 yrs. old.

The Exchange Club's Judges present numerous ribbons and awards which are highly prized by their young recipients.
For the past 13 yrs. my husband and I have had the pleasure of sponsoring an award at this Youth Art Show to recognize outstanding talent as well as to encourage the further growth and development of promising young artists.

Plein Air Painting Equipment and Supplies I Use to "Paint Charleston Daily"

It's always interesting to see the equipment plein air artists use to paint on location. This past weekend at the Oil Painters of America "SC Paint Out" at Poplar Grove, artists working in oil, pastel, acrylics and watercolor were seen using field easels made by "Open Box M ", "EASyL", and "Soltek" along with traditional French easels and customized painting set-ups.

I've been asked what supplies I use for plein air painting around the Lowcountry. My painting set up is well suited for painting out of the back of my car or at locations accessible with a rolling cart. For overseas travel, workshops, backpacking or remote painting locations a more streamlined system would be needed, such as the "Open Box M" easel and accessories.

I like the versatility of the "Stanrite" Standard light weight aluminum folding easel. It's designed with a cross brace which I use for my palette and has flip down spikes on each leg to anchor the easel in the ground on windy days.

I've customized the easel with 2 plastic brush holders attached to the front legs. I keep clean brushes on the left and wet brushes on the right. I hang a plastic shopping bag over one of the brush holders to stash my dirty paint rags and trash as I paint. I use Gamblin "Gamsol" orderless mineral spirits in a glass baby food jar on the palette to thin paint and clean the brushes.

Brushes are stored in a round, plastic tube case. (I've also seen one "custom" made out of a cut PVC plumbing pipe with a cap at ea. end.)

Common butcher paper serves as a disposable palette in a Masterson plastic palette case. The sealed lid allows paint to be set out on the palette before going on location (saves time) and later stored in the freezer to keep it workable for several days (saves money).

I paint on birch wood panels I prepare with either canvas or Gamblin Gesso. Sometimes I like to use cradled wood panels which I also sand and gesso. I've found panels are better than stretched canvas on location because they block sunlight coming through the back of the painting surface.
I prefer to stand when I paint but often bring a folding chair if I'll be painting all day.

The following is a list of things I pack in a folding pull cart which was bought at a boating supply store:
Spare paint tubes in a plastic shoebox, extra brushes and palette knife, orderless mineral spirits, masking tape, waterless hand cleaner (orange pumice type), paper towels, a view finder, mirror (to check values and composition), bug spray/ mosquito repelling device, sunblock cream, ground tarp, hat, plastic bags for trash, bottled water, and cell phone.

In the Fall, the full moon often causes unusually high tides in the Lowcountry. I spent the afternoon today painting this tidal effect by former rice fields now turned back into marshes.

A beautiful full moon flood tide lasted for much of the afternoon, making my attempt to capture this marsh scene easier than last time.

The painting began with a toned canvas panel on which I sketched the composition with burnt sienna oil paint.

Once I had completed this stage, I quickly painted in medium values of warm and cool local colors.

I completed the painting by adding highlights in the marsh grass and working on the reflections in the water of the foreground.

Marsh Creek Plein Air Painting - Racing Time and Tides

Plein air painting on location is never more challenging than when trying to record rapidly changing weather conditions such as ebbing tidal water and the setting sun.

I started this creek side marsh painting in the afternoon with a quick charcoal reference sketch on a toned canvas about 3:00.

An hour later, I had laid in mid tones and was trying to refine my values in the sky and creek which were rapidly changing. Notice the dropping water level in the creek.

Soon the creek had run dry, the afternoon light faded, and I still had away to go with the painting. I like to finish plein air works "alla prima" (all at once) but I lost the light and tide this afternoon.

In today's race to paint the score is: Mother Nature "1" vs. Plein Air Painter "0".

I could finish the painting from my reference photos but the finished painting wouldn't be the same.

I'll return another day to paint faster and smarter. Time and Tide wait for no one...

"Autumn Gold Marsh" A Plein Air Painting of a Lowcountry Marsh

This view of a Lowcountry tidal creek winding through marsh grass turning gold in the autumn light caught my eye as I searched for a painting location during the Oil Painter's of America's (OPA) "Great American Paint Out" at Poplar Grove this weekend.

Plein Air painters from all over the region including members of OPA, the Charleston Outdoor Painters Association, the Charleston Artist Guild, and the Community of I'On Artists gathered to paint in the beautiful fall weather at the 6,000 acre property of Poplar Grove.

Painting this tidal creek required working fast to capture the ebbing tidal water and rapidly changing afternoon light. These conditions often create a painting that is looser and more expressive than work created in a studio environment.

The need to work quickly is one of the challenges that artists find both frustrating and rewarding about painting on location-"en plein air". Sometimes the effort to paint en plein air produces a fresh, exciting finished canvas. Sometimes a less finished but still useful color study or location sketch. Whatever the result, the experience of plein air painting on location in a natural setting, renews and expands an artist's skill.

Plein Air Artist Reception for the Oil Painters of America "Great American Paint Out" 2008 Charleston, SC

Many of the nearly 30 plein air artists participating in the 2008 Oil Painters of America sponsored "Great American Paint Out" gathered Sunday in the spectacular setting of the Poplar Grove Boathouse on Rantowles Creek near Charleston, SC.

Good food, friends, and artwork all added to the enjoyment of a beautiful Fall day spent relaxing on the spacious porch overlooking ancient oaks and the sparkling water of Rantowles Creek at Poplar Grove.

The afternoon provided painters the chance to discuss their weekends work with each other and Poplar Grove guests.
Pictured left to rt. are artists Hilary Lambert, Ann Merrill, Bonnie Stabler, OPA member and event organizer Sara Jane Reynolds, Barrie Hinson, and Veronique Ariel.

When asked what would be their advice on painting "en plein air" (painting on location) to new plein air painters, some of the artists offered the following replies.

"Don't throw everything you have at the canvas. Keep something in reserve. Winston Churchill in his book "Painting as a Pastime" uses the analogy of creating a painting to fighting a battle. If a general uses everything he has, all his artillery, and keeps nothing in reserve, and if at the end of the day he hasn't won the battle, he has nothing left. I wish I'd had a chance to hear comments from all the artists painting en plein air this weekend. Several artists advised against using "tube" green paint. They believe mixing greens from their palette colors unifies and strengthens their plein air paintings.

Oil Painters of America "Great American Paint Out " 2008 Plein Air Event at Poplar Grove

The Oil Painters of America (OPA) organized a plein air event this weekend at Poplar Grove Plantation near Charleston, SC as part of OPA's "Great American Paintout".

Local OPA member Sara Jane Reynolds invited regional artists including the Charleston Outdoor Painters Association , and the Charleston Artist Guild to paint with OPA members on this spectacular 6,000 acre Lowcountry Preserve.

The weather was perfect for plein air painting, sunny and mild with few bugs - a rare day in our semi tropical climate.

I took a break from my afternoon painting on a peaceful tidal creek to see who was painting where.

Here are a few of the painters I found painting at locations all over the 6,000 acres of property that make up Poplar Grove.

The covered dock on Rantowles Creek was a popular painting site.
Taking advantage of great views from every direction were painters Barrie Hinson, Ben Nita McAdam, Ann Merrill, Sally Reynolds, and Rick Reinert.

Sparky Howard, Property Manager of Poplar Grove takes notes while keeping things running smoothly as Sara Jane Reynolds and Ann Merrill enjoy the views of the creek.

Linda Hickman chose to paint an open marsh view including a creek side oak tree used as a "rookery" by herons in the evening.

in the shade of a group of trees. The afternoon light on a marsh vista and distant tree line made an interesting composition for her second painting of the afternoon.

Carol McGill was putting the finishing touches on her palette knife painting of Rantowles Creek at Bulow Boat Landing. Carol had created two plein air paintings of Poplar Grove that could be hung together as a set. She said a number of "Paint Out" artists had chosen to paint at the landing earlier in the day.

The Oil Painters of America SC "Great American Paint Out" plein air event continues tomorrow with a morning paint out session followed by a reception from 11-1pm to meet the artists and view the artwork in the Poplar Grove Boat House.

"Paint Charleston Daily" is about painting in the beauty of Charleston and the SC Lowcountry. The light is softer and the air is sweeter under the sheltering branches of the Angel Oak.
What a wonderful way to spend a fall morning in the Lowcountry.
Today's charcoal and conte drawing of Angel Oak is a welcome change from my plein air painting in oils.
Drawing on location with charcoal and other dry media is a looser, more direct artistic treatment of a subject which helps keep my oil paintings fresh and expressive.
I also enjoy the unique beauty and expressiveness of the artist's "mark making" evident in a Fine Art Drawing.

The woods along Angel Oak Rd. are full of red survey markers signaling the soon to be cleared woodlands surrounding Angel Oak Park to make way for high density housing and commercial development.

Hurricane Art - "Waterspout " An Etching from the Hurricane Hugo Storm Series

September is the peak season for hurricanes in Charleston. Tornado damage in SC from Tropical Storm Fay last week and the strengthening of new storm systems in both the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean have alerted locals to the danger of these storms. Many new residents of the Lowcountry have never weathered a hurricane.
I'm posting photos of storm damage from Hurricane Hugo and the etching "Waterspout" from the Hurricane Hugo Storm Series as visual reminders of the powerful destructive forces in all hurricanes.

"Waterspout" is one of 12 etchings in a series created from storm damaged zinc printing plates of my impressions from Hurricane Hugo. The etchings have been exhibited as a group show "The Storm Series" in Charleston, SC and individually at the University of South Carolina Aiken's Etherredge Fine Arts Center and The Piccolo Spoleto Juried Print Exhibition at the Old Charleston Jail.

Although my family evacuated our home on the Isle of Palms for Hurricane Hugo, we underestimated the storms strength by staying in Mt. Pleasant,SC. We were lucky. Only our property was damaged. Next time we won't wait to evacuate much farther inland!

As the September 21 anniversary of Hurricane Hugo's 1987 arrival in the Lowcountry approaches, I'm posting another of the etchings from "The Storm Series".

As Tropical Storm Fay dumps up to 30 inches of rain in areas of Florida, Charleston and the SC Lowcountry are also getting lots of rain from the outer bands of the storm.

This stormy weather reminds me of a series of etchings I made after Hurricane Hugo struck Charleston, SC on September 21, 1989.
After Hugo hit Charleston, I found zinc printing plates that had been etched from the storm surge, rainfall, and high winds which had also heavily damaged my home and much of coastal SC.

These storm etched printing plates became the inspiration for a group of etchings I created of my impressions from Hurricane Hugo.
Driving wind, rain, high seas, tornadoes all found expression in a collection of large etchings I call "The Storm Series".

Land Surrounding "Angel Oak "To Be Residential/Retail Development

The land surrounding one of Charleston's most beautiful and inspiring natural treasures "The Angel Oak" will be cleared for a development plan endorsed by Mayor Joe Riley and the Charleston City Council. Recently released plans call for the land immediately surrounding the small Angel Oak Park to be developed into "low end" housing and commercial/retail space.

A reader sent the following comment about The Angel Oak which I would like to pass on:

"... I am currently working to save The Angel Oak from being developed around. The City of Charleston and Mayor Riley have approved development on 3 sides of her to include "low end" housing and commercial/retail space. The construction, destruction of surrounding forest and high density population will be devastating for her. Can she survive it?

Studio Palette Color Choices for Landscape and Still Life Painting

Recently, I've been experimenting with different color choices on my studio palette for landscape and still life painting. Here's a photo of my studio palette "tube" colors (upper left corner) and mixtures. I especially like the bright, transparent red that results from mixing permanent rose and cadmium orange. French ultramarine blue and perm. rose make beautiful variations of purple and mauve.

The tube colors shown on the palette are: permanent sap green, cerulean blue, French ultramarine blue, permanent alizarin crimson, permanent rose, burnt sienna, cadmium orange, cadmium yellow pale, a mixture of cad. orange+cad. yellow, and titanium white. I also use warm and cool tinting whites mixed from these colors.

With so many rich colors, it's tempting to "use every crayon in the box", but using complements and well mixed grays will always make a stronger painting.
