Sketching On A Summer Evening

I've always admired the way sunlight and shadows move in the branches of ancient live oak trees. Lately I've been sketching these light effects and the movement of moss blowing in the summer breeze through the trees. I'm hoping to be able to evoke  the spirit of these graceful trees in an upcoming series of paintings. 

Here's a recent sketch I did of a moss covered branch of a live oak in the evening breeze.  Love these old oak trees - so strong, enduring, and graceful in all types of weather...

Few creatures in the ocean inspire as much pleasure and excitement as dolphins. My painting, " The Dolphin Watchers" captures a moment when three women on the beach near Fort Moultrie spot wild dolphins in Charleston Harbor.

As they shield their eyes from the afternoon sun, one girl points to the spot she's just seen the dolphins surface, another strains to see these beautiful, playful creatures, as a third tries to capture the memorable moment with her camera. The energy and excitement of their encounter with the dolphins is conveyed in my painting by their body positions and the use of  bright colors in the summer sunshine.

This month the moon has been rising early in the eastern sky. It's already ascended high above the horizon by twilight-the time between sundown and full darkness in the evening.

My painting "Twilight Moon Rising" catches the brief time when the moon shines softly as it rises through the fading light over the marsh.

National Arbor Day 2012

Happy National Arbor Day 2012.  "Lowcountry Morning Glow" is my plein air painting of a SC Lowcountry marsh hummock with the state tree - the Palmetto.  What a great day to get outside and celebrate the beauty of trees.

CAG Signature Art Exhibition 2012 Popular Draw for Collectors and Guests

The 2012 CAG Signature Art Exhibition was off to a banner start at the Charleston Visitors Center with interested guests and a record number of early sales this past Sunday.

71 painters, photographers, and sculptors from throughout SC had works juried into the exhibition which began to attract appreciative viewers and collectors even as the artwork was being hung by the exhibitions committee.

The Exhibition will be on display at the Charleston Visitors Center, 375 Meeting St, Charleston SC,through April 21,2012. An Artists Reception will be held Sat., April 21,2012, 6 -8pm.

A new painting of St. Michael's Church by Charleston Artist Katherine Schneider

I enjoyed painting historic St. Michael's Church in the early morning sun as the bells from the steeple chimed the time as they have for centuries.

St. Michael's Church, situated at the "Four Corners of Law" in Charleston, is the oldest church building in the city. Both President George Washington in 1791 and General Robert E. Lee in 1861 attended worship services at St. Michael's during visits to the city. Although the entire steeple sank 8" as a result of the earthquake 1886, the steeple clock remains the oldest functioning colonial tower clock in the country.

When the painting was on view at a recent exhibit, a comment was made that "angels" could be seen in the brushwork of sky above the church. What a wonderful impression to be seen in a painting of a church building that has withstood wars, fire, earthquakes and  hurricanes throughout it's long history in this city by the sea.

Katherine Schneider Exhibits at the Oil Painters of America Charleston Paint Out 2011

43 painters including Charleston artist Katherine M. Schneider enjoyed beautiful weather as they gathered in historic Charleston, SC for the 2011 Oil Painters of America (OPA) Paint Out Saturday.

The artists chose to paint at a wide variety of locations in downtown Charleston ranging from historic churches such as St Michael's Church painted by OPA member Katherine Schneider to harbor vistas, historic homes and waterfront parks.

OPA member John Hulsey and his wife Ann traveled from Kansas to participate in the Charleston  paint out.

As the artists completed their plein air works, the paintings were delivered to Lambert Gray Gallery where they were hung for the evening Exhibition and Reception.

Oil Painters of America "Great American Paint Out 2011" Charleston, SC

Oil Painters of America (OPA) artist members and guests will be painting "en plein air" (on location) in historic downtown Charleston from 10:00 - 4:00 Saturday November 12, as part of the 2011 Oil Painters of America "Great American Paint Out".

This year's event in Charleston is being organized by OPA members Sally Reynolds and Hilarie Lambert and is hosted by Lambert Gray Gallery and Studios 54 Broad St. Charleston SC. A reception will follow at the gallery 5:30 - 7:00 pm.

Several artists including Katherine Schneider will be painting along historic Broad Street during the morning and afternoon and welcome visitors to stop by and see what's on their easels.
