"Christmas Treats" A Pastel Painting by Katherine M Schneider

The upcoming holidays are a time of exciting sights, sounds, and tastes some of which I have pictured in my pastel painting "Christmas Treats".

As we start the annual whirl of activity for this time of year, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season.

"Spicy Christmas Treats" A Pastel Painting by Charleston Artist Katherine M Schneider

Have you ever smelled an orange studded with dried cloves? The wonderful, spicy fragrance is a favorite at Christmastime.

In Colonial days, the clove studded fruit was allowed to dry out and then used in linen presses as a fragrant pomander the rest of the year.

In my painting "Spicy Christmas Treats", I used the directional lines of the cloves to add interest and variety to the composition.

The oranges in the painting will add a fresh fragrance to my home and studio throughout the holiday. I've also found that they make much appreciated gifts.

If you have the time, try making one. Pierce an orange with an ice pick or other sharp object to get through the rind, then push in a piece of dried clove. The more cloves you use, the more fragrant the pomander. Enjoy!

"A Lack of Communication" A Slice of Life Painting by Charleston Artist Katherine M. Schneider

Cell phones and concrete surfaces don't mix well. My cell phone was a recent victim of a fall onto concrete. The result? A major lack of communication.

Just one of those days, a slice of life that made it's way onto a panel as a post card size daily painting.

"Portrait of a Reporter" by Charleston Artist Katherine M. Schneider

Contemporary portraits are taking on exciting, unexpected new forms. Modern portraits often show elements of a person other than a face that express a person's personality as much as a traditional likeness can.

The Post and Courier ran an article about Daily Painters in which my artwork and blog were included. The cover story "Art of the Deal - All In A Day's Work" by Kyle Stock generated much interest in regional art blogs. (Check out the link to this article in the sidebar "Recommended Links" The Post and Courier Article...)

Being interviewed for the article and seeing reporters at work in the darkened expanse of a busy, city newsroom were the inspirations for today's painting.

Jalapeno and Hot Sauce - "Hot Stuff"

I recently made tacos for dinner. The bright colors and spicy flavors of the ingredients made a good meal and I think, an interesting painting.

This is a postcard size (4"x 6") oil painting on a wood panel. Bright colors, Spicy flavors. The title of this painting is definitely, "Hot Stuff".
In the collection of Mr. Fred Jenkins.

"Sweet Season" for Strawberry and Cantaloupe

The fresh strawberries this year are the biggest I've ever seen. The strawberry in the painting was the size of a small plum and twice as sweet. So was the cantaloupe.

This is a postcard size (4"x6") oil painting on a wood panel. I've just finished both the fruit and painting. Both gave me great satisfaction. The title of this one, "Sweet Season".

Price: $75.00.

Sunlit Geranium A La Impressionism

"Sunlit Geranium"
Oil on canvas panel
Image size: 8.5"x 11.5"
Framed in gold leaf: 14"x 17"
Price: $225.00

I enjoy painting the first flowers of spring. I used bold, loose brush strokes to give the "impression" of the warm breeze and bright sunlight I felt while painting this early blooming geranium.
