"Dolphin Watchers" Spotting Wild Dolphins in Charleston Harbor

Few creatures inspire as much pleasure and excitement as dolphins. Today's painting, "Dolphin Watchers" captures the moment when three figures on the beach near Fort Moultrie spot wild dolphins in Charleston Harbor.

As they shield their eyes from the afternoon sun, one figure points to the spot she's just seen the dolphins surface, another strains to see these beautiful, playful creatures, as a third tries to capture the memorable moment with her camera.

"Cool Waves, Hot Day" A beach painting by Charleston Artist Katherine M. Schneider

Now that both bite victims are are thankfully recovering from their injuries, I can focus again on my seascape painting.

Today's painting is of seaside fun in the surf with a blue boogie board. What a great way to beat the heat!

Charleston's beaches are a popular spot now that we're in our second week of a record setting heat wave.

"Wedding Chairs on the Beach" - A plein air landscape by painter Katherine M. Schneider

These beach chairs are a magnet for people. Every time I start a painting of them, someone comes up and sits in them when I'm half way into the painting. I look up and suddenly my empty chairs are full. This has happened three times.

The second couple who filled the chairs asked if they were "in the way of my painting the red roof house". When I replied that the chairs were the subject of my painting, they obliged by taking a walk before returning to sit and visit. They told me they had been married in the chairs here on the beach at this, their favorite vacation "get away" spot.

It is a beautiful spot to relax by Charleston harbor and watch the ships pass Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter.

If I paint there again, I'll start by adding imaginary figures and wait til somebody shows up (as usual) to fill the chairs. It's nice to see them so well used by beach goers, but I like to think of them as "The Wedding Chairs".

A painting of "A Walk To The Beach"

My young son and mother used to love going to the beach only minutes away.

Both are older now than I have portrayed them in this painting which brings back many happy memories.

The Charleston area has many barrier islands with wonderful beaches. The Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island, Folly Beach, Kiawah and Seabrook Island are all popular places to live and visit in the Lowcountry.
